GUIDED BY INVOICES — 2011–2013

 

Guided by Invoices was founded and directed by Anne-Brigitte Sirois in a ground-floor space at 558 West 21st Street in West Chelsea.

 

The gallery presented a deliberately wide-ranging program encompassing painting, sculpture, photography, film, sound, performance, installation, language, mathematics, and emerging technologies. Across these different forms, the exhibitions engaged questions of perception and materiality, language and systems of meaning, mathematics and scientific thought, memory and transformation, and the relationship of art to social, political, economic, and environmental realities.

 

Abstraction occupied an important place in the program, particularly work that approached painting as an active field of inquiry rather than a fixed visual language. Alongside it were practices concerned with language and classification, mathematical and computational structures, the instability of memory and representation, and the ways technology alters how we perceive and inhabit the world. Other exhibitions addressed finance, political rhetoric, architecture and infrastructure, environmental change, labor, inequality, and public life.

 

The program included solo exhibitions, group exhibitions, and projects developed with invited curators and collaborating galleries and organizations. Artists, curators, critics, and interns contributed to an environment in which very different artistic positions could be encountered alongside one another.
